“Did somebody say “eagle”?”

But first, the news!

Biologists observe bald eagles not being complete jerks.

He took “fly like an eagle” literally…

Now let’s learn about eagles!

Eagle nests are called “aeries” and to call them ginormous is an understatement. Learn all about them in this article courtesy of the National Eagle Center.

“Herb? Herb? Gosh darnit, where is that eagle…”

There is a reason we call someone with great vision “eagle eyed” in the English language. Check out this cool article about eagle vision, courtesy of Indiana Public Media.

“I seeeee you!”

Enjoy this beautiful painting of a bald eagle by John James Audubon while you listen to the wonderful Mariah Avix read The Eagle by Alfred Lord Tennyson.  Her rendition is at time mark: 00:00.

The Eagle

He clasps the crag with crooked hands;
Close to the sun in lonely lands,
Ring’d with the azure world, he stands.
The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;
He watches from his mountain walls,
And like a thunderbolt he falls.

On a much lighter note, check out this video of Sam the Eagle, one of the original muppets. He is even older than Kermit! Sam is a funny commentary about censorship, a fine example of Jim Henson’s ability to deliver meaningful content without being preachy. And, it’s hilarious! “Lady Wrestlers?!?”

The eagle is a popular animal in heraldry. Why do so many countries have an eagle in their coats of arms? Here’s a great article courtesy of Quora.com that discusses that question.

Varmints! podcast’s buddy Paxson asked us to talk about Harpy Eagles. Turns out that as far as their general behavior and effect on pop culture, they aren’t really different enough from other eagles to fill up a whole show on their own. So, we decided to discuss them for Paxton as a show segment instead. They are super cool and the babies are ADORBZ! Check out this great article about them courtesy of the Peregrine Fund.

“Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful.”

“Or me ’cause I am legit adorbz.”
